Next month, for the first time since the 2011 legislature inflicted deep cuts on public education, you will have a big opportunity to do something about it at the ballot box. The primary election on May 29 will determine Democratic and Republican nominees for the legislature (as well as the U.S. Congress and other offices). In many legislative districts, there will be no real competition in next November’s general election, so the real contest is in the primary next month. The deadline for registering to vote in the May 29 election is April 30. Be sure that you and your eligible family members and your co-workers are registered to vote. Even before that May 29 primary election, many of you around the state will have another set of important elections on May 12 for seats on the school board in your school district. Among school districts holding trustee elections on May 12 are Brazosport ISD, Dallas ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Goose Creek ISD, Killeen ISD, North East ISD (Bexar County), Pflugerville ISD, Round Rock ISD, Spring Branch ISD, and Victoria ISD.
These school-board elections will decide who controls local employment and education policy in affected districts, so it will behoove all education employees to get involved. Note well: The registration deadline for participating in the May 12 school-board elections is just one week from today, April 12.
